Timeout Ep. 4: Redefining Indonesian Film Genre: Between Money Making Movies vs Idealism

Film is one of the most accessible forms of entertainment and relaxation for a wide range of audiences. According to Cinepoint data from 2023, the number of moviegoers in Indonesia has exceeded 56 million people. With such a large number, the film industry has a significant influence on the national creative economy and tourism.

Indonesian film genres still tend to lean towards horror and the supernatural. However, this can be a hindrance to the sustainability mission of the Indonesian film industry, considering local filmmakers do not yet have the resources and supportive ecosystem.

Moreover, despite the high enthusiasm for horror films among Indonesian audiences, the industry needs to explore a broader range of topics.
